Dear Reader,
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford
provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for one
hour a week to any adult who wants to learn to read or
to improve his or her reading skills, basic literacy
skills, or English as a second language. We also
offer assistance with life skills as part of our
commitment to life long learning.
Volunteers from the community are trained through
18-hour tutor training courses, held several times
throughout the year, to teach basic reading to adults
and English as a Second Language to foreign language
speaking adults. All training materials are
provided free of charge for prospective tutors,
Since its inception in 1986, Literacy Volunteers of
Greater Sanford has trained over 500 tutors and paired
over 900 students.
"Friends of Literacy"
who choose not to tutor but are interested in helping
donate their time and talents to support the LVGS efforts.
In 2004 Fiscal Year, LVGS volunteers all together
contributed 4,500 hours to the program.
Many high interest books for adults who are learning to
read are housed in a library at the LGVS office in
Sanford.
These funds provide LVGS with
two part time Directors, tutor training, and instruction
materials for students, vocabulary books, a resource
center for tutors, a computer lab for both students and
tutors as well as instructors for the York County
Shelter.
The Literacy Volunteers of
Greater Sanford office is located in the Townhouse Mall
in Sanford and welcomes anyone who wishes to become a
student, a tutor, a Friend of Literacy, or is interested
in learning about literacy.
Along with
the other members of our Volunteer Board of Directors, I
look forward to meeting you. Thank you for your
contribution to literacy.
