A Crisis in
Literacy
Did you know that 150,000 adults — or
one in seven — in Maine cannot read this sentence?
They could not read the map to trace the Making Tracks
2007 team across Canada.
In America, 44 million
Americans cannot read it as well. These adults struggle
to read on the job, at the doctor’s office or at home
with their children.
The
Solution
Each day at LVGS, adults strive
to face their literacy challenges — to better their
lives, workplaces and communities. Adults like Bruce
Couture, who is an employee of the Portsmouth Naval Yard
in New Hampshire, work with trained, volunteer tutors to
meet their goals in reading, math, computers and other
skills.
“I
tried everything else. I put myself down for so
many years. I am proving that is wrong. In just two
years working with my tutor at LVGS, I have increased my
reading by two levels.”

Success Stories” on the next page. To learn
